What an excellent article on an important topic in Fijian society. I briefly looked at 'silence' in Fiji when I researched the music of Fiji and noticed how important silence is on special vanua occasions. I recall being present at the installation of the Tui Cakau - Ratu Peniaia - and how dramatic the use of silence was on that occasion. on the other hand I think that children being silent in the school classroom is a problem as they need to articulate their thoughts verbally but are often conditioned to just keep quiet.

Summer reading on the subject:
"Silence is an exquisite, poignant collection of fictions' by one of Australia's finest writers. Each piece has its own startling imagery. This is a book that constantly surprises with its echoes of famous voices, and where the astonishing breadth of material historical, personal, imagined is held together by its central theme and by a web of subtle connections."
